Zach is back.
The defending Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers and star quarterback Zach Collaros have agreed to a one-year contract extension. The reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player was set to become a free agent next month.
Collaros coming off brilliant 2021 campaign
Collaros is coming off of a sensational 2021 campaign that saw the 33-year-old lead his team to a CFL-best 11-3 record and a Grey Cup championship. He also threw for 3185 passing yards (second most in league), a league-best 20 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions while completing 70.2% of his passes.
108th Grey Cup champ and MVP
The Steubenville, Ohio native was named the 108th Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Player after passing for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns in Winnipeg’s 33-25 overtime victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on December 12th, 2021.
“Everybody in the organization knew that I wanted to be back,” Collaros said, following the announcement that he had re-signed with Winnipeg.” I love the group of people that are there: the support group, the coaches, from the top down, and obviously the guys in the locker room. We’ve signed quite a few of our free agents, we have some to get back, and some other people to join the team. … This game is about winning football games and the journey that goes on during the season. … You know, you take a look around and a lot of us have been in other places, but you know, I don’t think anybody wanted to leave this group, and you know, not chase after wins every week together.”
Collaros set to enter 10th CFL season
Collaros joined the Blue Bombers mid-way through the 2019 season following a trade from the Toronto Argonauts, and has claimed an incredible 17-2 record as starter since joining the club. Collaros and the Blue Bombers also won the 107th Grey Cup championship in 2019 before the CFL’s 2020 campaign was cancelled.
The veteran’s CFL career dates back to 2012 when he got started as a member of the Argonauts. He has also appeared in games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders. In 105 career games, the veteran quarterback has recorded 20,164 passing yards, 114 touchdowns, 58 interceptions and a 46-34 record as a starter.
Bombers have a chance to make history in 2022
Collaros and the Blue Bombers will look to become the first team since the Edmonton Eskimos to win three-consecutive Grey Cups. Edmonton won five-straight titles between 1978 and 1982.
Collaros’ Blue Bombers are favored to be crowned Grey Cup championships once again in 2022. They are listed at 4.00 to win it all, with the Roughriders a close second at 5.00.
