Natasha Staniszewski’s CanPL picks

Hey all! Another week of CanPL soccer is in the books. There were just two matches this past weekend but my picks performed fairly well. On Saturday, I correctly called an HFX-Forge draw and on Sunday I was just one goal off as Ottawa and York ended in a 1-1 deadlock while I called a 2-1 York victory.

The week ahead features five games, including three Saturday matches. I’m really looking forward to that triple-header. Let’s get to my picks!

Saturday: Forge vs. HFX Wanderers

Natasha’s prediction: Forge Win

Forge FC and HFX Wanderers FC will meet for the second-straight Saturday, this time from Tim Horton’s Field in Hamilton.

Featuring two of the league’s top defensive squads, last Saturday’s match ended in a scoreless draw. That leaves the head-to-head in a deadlock, with each team recording one win and two draws in four matches this season.

The draw marked just the second of Forge’s season, who sit a single point back of Pacific FC for second in the CanPL. They have been one of the hottest teams in the league as of late, posting a 4-1-1 record over their last six games.

The Wanderers have just one win over their last five but have found themselves in a lot of draws latey. As things stand, they hold the final CanPL playoff spot and sit seven points back of Forge for third.

Following the draw this past weekend, I am going to have to give the home team the edge this time around. Forge takes it 1-0 in another close defensive battle, leaving HFX scoreless for a third-straight game.

Saturday: Cavalry vs. Valour

Natasha’s prediction: Cavalry win

Our second match of the weekend will feature CanPL-leading Cavalry FC and sixth-place Valour FC.

Cavalry is coming off of a huge 2-1 win over Pacific FC on Thursday, courtesy of a pair of goals from Daan Klomp and David Norman Jr. Cavalry’s loss-less streak remains alive, as the team has posted a 3-0-3 record over their last six games. They hold a slim two-point edge over Pacific for first and will look to create some more separation with a win over a struggling Valour club.

Valour fell 2-0 to Atletico Ottawa on Wednesday and now sit six points below fourth place. They have lost two-straight matches and will need to pick up some points quickly if they want any shot at a playoff berth.

Head-to-head, Valour has yet to pick up a win in this matchup but the last two matches have ended in draws. Cavalry took the first two meetings.

I am going with Cavalry to stay hot at home, 2-1 the final.

Saturday: Pacific vs. York United

Natasha’s prediction: York United win

Our third and final match of the weekend is a big one with major standings implications for both teams. Looking to hold on to second-place or catch Cavalry for first is Pacific FC who will host York United FC from Starlight Stadium on Saturday. York sits just one point back of HFX for the final CanPL playoff spot.

Pacific surrendered their hold on first-place this past Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Cavalry. They have now lost four of their last six and will look to make up some of that ground against an also-struggling York team.

Coming off of a scoreless draw to last-place Atletico Ottawa, York has failed to pick up a victory over their last five. They have gone 0-1-4 over that span.

The two clubs have met just twice this season. The first match ended in a 2-2 draw before Pacific took the next match handily, 3-0 at Investors Group Field.

York and Pacific sit at one and two in the CanPL goals-scored department, proving to be two of the best offensive teams in the league. Expect a a high-scoring affair.

I’m taking York to pick up a huge victory on the road. 3-2 the final.
