Packers-Cardinals: game preview and betting odds

Week eight’s Thursday Night NFL matchup is going to be a good one. Two of the best quarterbacks and two of the best teams in the NFL will square off on Thursday night as the Green Bay Packers visit the Arizona Cardinals. The primetime NFC matchup will get underway at 8:20 pm ET.

Super Bowl contenders and MVP candidates

The Cardinals remain the NFL’s lone undefeated team at 7-0 this season while the Packers are one of just three teams to possess a 6-1 record through seven games.

The two clubs are both top five in Super Bowl odds. Arizona (10.00) has the fourth-best chances to win a title this season, while Green Bay sits one spot behind them at 13.00.

Third-year Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and veteran Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers have both positioned themselves to be among the NFL’s leading MVP candidates. Murray sits at a very close second to Josh Allen (5.00) at 5.50 odds to win the award while Rodgers is listed at 15.00.

Cards look to remain perfect

Not only have the Cardinals won all seven of their games this season, but they have done so in dominant fashion. They have the NFL’s top point differential, winning their games by an average of 15.9 points per contest. Arizona took down the Houston Texans by a score of 31-5 last week behind 3 touchdown passes from Murray and 81 rushing yards from Chase Edmonds.

Veteran defensive end J.J. Watt is expected to undergo shoulder surgery that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the season. Receiver DeAndre Hopkins is expected to play despite hamstring issues.

Packers look for seventh-straight win

Green Bay kicked off the 2021 season with a 38-3 week one blowout loss at the hands of the New Orleans Saints and have been magnificent ever since. The Packers held off the visiting Washington Football Team last week in a 24-10 victory at Lambeau Field. They have now won six-straight and will look to make it seven on Thursday night.

However, they will have to do it without receivers Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling who are all expected to miss the game due to injury and COVID-19 protocols.

Betting odds

The Cardinals are favored by 6 points in this one. The Packers are listed at 3.25 to win while Arizona sits at 1.37. The over/under is set at 50.5 total points to be scored.

Make no mistake; the quarterback battle is going to be epic. Murray understands the hype around the game but the young star is doing his best to treat it like any other matchup.

“I don’t make it too much,” Murray said. “It’s a primetime game on TV, but it’s another game for me. I have to go out there and execute, and if I don’t, we know the end result.”

The 24-year-old has passed for 2002 yards, 17 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, a 73.5% completion rate and a 116.8 passer rating this season.

Kyler Murray Props:

In his 17th NFL season, Aaron Rodgers has passed for 1710 yards, 15 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, a 68.3% completion rate and a 108.2 passer rating for the Packers.

Other props to consider

Chase Edmonds Rushing Yards: 44.5 (Over: 1.76 | Under: 1.80)

The fourth-year running back broke out for one of his best games of the season last week against Houston.

Robert Tonyan Receiving Yards: 41.5 (Over: 1.80 | Under: 1.80)

With Adams, Lazard and Valdes-Scantling all out, someone will need to step up at receiver for Green Bay. Tonyan tallied 4 catches and 63 yards for the Packers last week vs Washington.
